We say the Pledge of Allegiance every day in class, but do our students really understand the words they’re reciting?

Making the Pledge Meaningful

I teach the pledge of allegiance in my classroom because I want the promises my students are reciting each morning to be more than just a routine. I wanted the experience to be meaningful for them.

If you are searching for ways to do this in your classroom, here are three simple ideas you could try that would help you attach meaning to the words they are saying:

Have students illustrate one line of the pledge. (Individually or in small groups).
Match vocabulary words with kid-friendly definitions.
Use motions or symbols to act it out.

Maci and Friends Help Teach the Pledge of Allegiance in a Story

Or you could try my pledge of allegiance resource: Maci and Friends Learn About the Pledge of Allegiance. I created this resource to give my students a hands-on way to learn the meaning behind each phrase without adding a ton of extra prep.

In this story-based resource, Maci and her friends explain each part of the Pledge to Bentley, Maci’s puppy, while students create a keyword dictionary of their own.

Afterwards, my students colored and cut out the picture of Bentley that I taped to the wall near our flag so they would be reminded of what they had learned every time we recited the pledge.

Their favorite part was playing the quiz game on the computer.

One of my students asked, “Mrs. Avella, can you make a game like this for all of the things we learn?” Who knew a quiz would make them so happy?

The whole experience was so satisfying knowing that they would leave second grade with a better understanding of the vocabulary in the pledge, and an appreciation for the blessings we enjoy in our country.

Teaching has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Both of my parents are retired public school teachers, I followed in their footsteps, and now my daughter is in her first year as a middle school computer science and math teacher. Teaching truly runs in our DNA!

I graduated from Northwest Nazarene University with a B.A. in K-8 education, and over the past 25 years, I’ve had the joy of teaching in many forms:

K-3 reading intervention
Second and sixth grades in public schools
Homeschool co-ops, Sunday School, and Bible studies

This year, I’ve stepped into something new: teaching Exploratory Spanish to middle school students. It’s been a fun challenge and a great learning experience that has inspired some of the resources I’m creating now.
